The Organization SEAMEO

The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) was established in 1965 to promote regional cooperation in education, science and culture.

As of 2012, SEAMEO has 11 Member Countries namely Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste and Vietnam; 7 Associate Member Countries namely Australia, Canada, France, Germany, The Netherlands, New Zealand, and Spain; and 3 Affiliate Members namely the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE), the University of Tsukuba and the British Council.

SEAMEO has 20 Regional Centres/Units in 8 countries across the region with the mandate to leverage expertise, knowledge and resources to serve the region for advancing the quality of life of its population through training, research, consultancy services, discussion fora and information dissemination through seminars, conferences and others.

SEAMEO RECFON (Regional Centre for Food and Nutrition) is one of the 20 SEAMEO Centres/Units which previously known as SEAMEO Tropical Medicine and Public Health/TROPMED Regional Centre in Community Nutrition/RCCN. The Centre is a unit under the jurisdiction of the Indonesian Government’s Ministry of Education and Culture, and hosted by the University of Indonesia.

Through its activities in training and education, research and technical assistance as well as information dissemination, SEAMEO RECFON will continue its commitment to build the human resource capacity in food and nutrition, to help improving the nutritional status of the community to achieve healthy and prosperous citizenry.

Currently SEAMEO has a core academic staff with 8 PhDs, 5 MSc and 3 PhD candidates with expertise in maternal nutrition, child nutrition, micronutrient, infant feeding, linear/goal programming, food safety, food security and health system research.

The Centre has an international recognized biochemical laboratory for vitamin A, iron, and zinc assessment and anthropometry equipments, and library and computer facilities.

Main tasks

The SEAMEO-TROPMED will be co-leader of WP4 (linear programming) and WP5 (summarizing of data and recommendation from WP2 – WP4). In addition, SEAMEO will contribute to WP2 (data and intervention mapping), WP3 (FCT) and WP6 (MCM) and WP8 (editorial committee).
